What is abortion? Abortion is the act of terminating a pregnancy before the intended due date. There has been much argument regarding whether or not this procedure should remain legal or not. Two main groups play a huge role in this argument, “Pro-Lifers” and “Pro-choicers.” People who coincide with the Pro-Life movement believe that everyone has a chance at life, especially when it comes to abortion. Opposing them are the people who coincide with the Pro-Choice movement. These people believe that abortion is a woman’s right and therefore they should get the final say regarding the future of their child. In my opinion the Pro choice argument is logical, progressive, and less contradictory than the pro-life argument. Thus, as you read on I am going to display some of the many fallacies of the pro-life argument.
I am going to begin by telling you the MAIN argument of Pro-Life movement supporters, “abortion is murder.” Although it may seem this way, it is proven that fetuses cannot even live unsupported before 21 weeks. It is important to consider the fact that most abortions(92%) occur during the first 13 weeks according to the CDC. Therefore proving that abortion is not murder since the baby is not able to maintain itself the same way a LIVING human is. Additionally, it is important to remember that the majority of people in the Pro-Life movement are republicans. This is ironic because many of these Pro-Life Republicans do not support universal healthcare; statistical evidence states only 52% of Republicans support UHS. Why is this ironic? Well, let’s analyze the information I just mentioned. The pro-life movement believes everyone should have the chance to live and only 52% support UHS. So more than half of these people are arguing for everyone to be able to live and then contradicting that by not supporting Universal Health Care, that doesn’t make sense, does it? Statistically speaking, UHS would be able to save 68,000 lives! This just goes to show one fallacy in the Pro-Life movement.
Adding on to this, Making abortion illegal won't stop abortions, rather it will stop safe abortions. One example of this can be seen when the senate of Argentina rejected a bill and made abortions illegal. Following this, a woman attempted an abortion on her own and ended up being one of the 40 women who died from unsafe abortions in Argentina. This doesn’t sound very pro-life to me. How are you going to advocate for getting rid of abortions because it kills the “lives” of babies when in reality it puts actual living women in danger of dying. This just goes to show how many “pro-lifers” are just “pro-birth.” These people do not care what happens to the baby after they are born, they just want to control women's bodies. An everlasting continuation of the patriarchy.
All things considered, most arguments in the Pro-Life movement do not make sense relative to other republican ideals . However, other arguments in the Pro-Life movement can be comprehended positively. Remember to always respect the opinions of other people even if they are not logical and don't coincide with what you believe. Thank you for reading this and feel free to give me feedback and comments!
